Cradle to cradle

Cradle to cradle is a very important term in the world of design. Cradle to cradle means actually that everything goes where it comes from. For example paper that can be recycled or even better the bio accumulates.

Cradle to cradle isn't just a term it is a vision, a vision that every designer should keep in mind while working on projects, because it depends on us we are the one deciding which materials to use. So actually the way the world will look is a little bit in our hands. This year we had environmental studies and I learned that a lot needs to be done to save the world.

If we look in the actuality we could see in the news a while ago that within 5 years Peking would drown in their garbage. So definitely something needs to be done and we can help decrease the garbage piles. Just think which function can I give my product after his economic life time or which materials can I use that maybe in a later stage can be reused.

Scientist keep searching for new materials, so this is why a designer most important hobby needs to be surf on the internet. Surf for new materials, new technologies, etc.

We are young, we are the future we can do something about. Please think about the materials you use in your product.

Here are two very inspiring videos, videos that inspired me.

Some stuff from me

So this is the first blog entry where I am gonna talk a lill about myself and about what exactly I do.
So my name is Bart Raeves, I live in Belgium and I am studying industrial design at PIH in Kortrijk. My passion is design, but not only design, I play football and I am also very into science. So for me design will always be something that looks nice combined with some technology. For me design doesn't stop just by looking for a nice form. Design is more than that for me, it is the complete package.
Well enough about me, let's see what kind of things I did during my second year of industrial design.
The year started with an assignment for SCA Packaging, we needed to design a new package for a kind of chocolate. This assignment was for a design competition organized by SCA.

My product for SCA was called Twist –It it was a package for M&M's and was based on the newest Axe Deodorant, but the innovative part was that as a hinge I used hotmelt glue, so everything rotated around that little hotmelt hinge.

The second assignment was one for PDC brush they are specialist in producing brooms, mops, etc. The assignment was: find a way to clean surfaces; I had a lot of ideas for this assignment. Cuz here I was able to mix the technology with regular design. The design I finally picked was one that was more practical to make a prototype out of it and the one I thought would change people's lives. It was the You – Tube – It who finally made it, it is a product to clean radiators, tubes, holes, etc.
The advantage of this product is that it will always take the maximal space it can get and this way a good clean is assured.

The third assignment of the year was to design an add-on for a Sita garbage container, not an easy job if you look at the amounts of gadgets that already exist for this kind of container.

My design was an idea to make sure that people aren't bothered by the smell of what's in the container, the add-on got the name Smell less.

The final assignment was one for Unilin the provider of products such as Quickstep. We needed to find a new way to integrate their pallets in a new innovative concept. I struggled at first cuz it is hard to get away from the cabinets or tables, but finally I found it.

The Flexi desk is a desk that your kid can use from 1st until 6th year of elementary school or even more. This was our final project so we needed to have everything, every single detail you needed to be able to defend.

But this year of course was more than just pure designing we needed to get familiar with CAD software too, for whom who don't know what CAD is it means computer aided design. So actually it is digitalizing your work, your design. More and more CAD is used over the whole design cycle; this is different from a few years ago. It can calculate which forces you can use, what the weight will be,

Here are some renders and little projects made in Alias Studio and Inventor.

Wacom: A Musthave for every designer

For you who don't know what a wacom is. A wacom is a graphical pallet that allows you to draw, to adjust pictures, to make realistic renders, and lots more.
It will help your drawing skills but the requirement is that you already need to be able to draw, cuz the pallet isn't gonna do it all for you.

Wacom guarantees a very stable and very flexible tablet, but the cool thing is when you buy the tablet you get free software including. For example Sketchbook pro and Photoshop elements are included in the

They have for everyone or for every type of person another product:
  1. The Bamboo: With bamboo we have a tablet made for the regular family or for people who just need it as a hobby. But it has already a lot of functions such as the ability to personalize postcards, pictures … with your handwriting. It allows you to navigate easy through certain menus.
For me this is too few, I need something that allows me to generate ideas, something that when I have an idea I can quickly sketch.
In the series of the Bamboo they have 3 different kinds of tablets, but all with more or less the same functions.
  2. The Intuos: If you ask me this is the one that is affordable and that really gives your draw that extra push. The Intuos is there in 4 different sizes.
The tablet has a practical zoom ring and also easy access programmable buttons. The price is a great deal higher than the Bamboo series, but here

Your money really is worth it. Your pictures and drawings and other things will be taken to a new level.
  3. The Cintiq: Man if I only had the money, this tablet is the dream for every designer well for me at least. It has everything a designer needs and more.

Well let's hope I get one for my bday next month !

First blog entry : The Citroën GT concept car

If only i could draw like this, then i could already quit school. No serious very nice drawing, this is what I would like to achieve after a while.
So let's talk about the car. The car is a Citroën and is not like how we know them. Citroën keeps it normally very basic, very for the normal people. But with this car , I was like wow is this Citroën? But then when you have a better look you see the curves of the Citroën we know.

Also Citroën decided to listen to the voices of all the car lovers, cuz the car who was first just designed for the game Gran Tourismo 5 is going in production.

Vincent Besson of Citroën confirmed that maximun 20 cars might be made, so if i only had the money now then it would have been a deal.
